An Overview of Autism

Autism is a perceptual disorder that affects the cognitive and language skills of a child, and it is usually characterized by ritualistic motor activity. Another devastating characteristic of these children is their social isolation. The child may not appear to want or need the comforting attention of a parent and will relate oddly to the environment--for example, developing a close attachment for an electronic appliance or a devastating fear of the vacuum cleaner. The causes of this disorder remain unknown despite a considerable amount of research; however, effective treatment plans and interventions have been developed. Bibliography lists 13 sources.
