Breen and Innes: "Myne Owne Ground": Race and
Freedom on Virginia's Eastern Shore (1980)
[ send me this essay ]
(5 pp) In the seventeenth century, blacks who were
either slaves or indentured servants had, at least
in one part of the South, a unique window of
opportunity open to freedom. Their story is seldom
known, and worth a closer look because of the
lessons it teaches about the power of free markets
and personal freedom. In "Myne Owne Ground,"
professors, T. H. Breen and Stephen Innes describe
settlements on the Eastern Shore of Virginia
between the years 1640 and 1680, and reflect the
impacts these free blacks had on the surrounding
community. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
